NEW YORK'S BENJAMIN HOTEL WINS COVETED ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AWARD

NEW YORK, February 6, 2000 - New York's most environmentally friendly hotel, The Benjamin, received the Environmental Awareness Lodging Leadership award at the 15th annual Hotel Industry Investment Conference. The Hotel Industry Investment Conference is put on by the UCLA Extension's Real Estate Center and co-sponsored by Hotel & Motel Management, Insignia/ESG Hotel Partners and several other hospitality companies. A panel of six judges narrowed the nominations to two finalists and The Benjamin was selected as the winner by a vote of conference attendees. According to John Moser, The Benjamin's general manager, "It is a great honor to receive the Lodging Leadership award on behalf of The Benjamin. We had the opportunity to rebuild the hotel, and we thought it only right to make The Benjamin exceed today's environmental standards." Manhattan East Suite Hotels' newest addition, The Benjamin, has been recognized as New York's most environmentally friendly hotel based on a five-globe certification from HVS International. The Benjamin is one of just four hotels in the world to earn all five ECOTEL® Globe Awards and the only ECOTEL®-certified property in Manhattan. The hotel's "green" commitment is expressed not only in its design and infrastructure, but in its management and operation as well. From the beginning of The Benjamin's renovation project, staff members reviewed construction plans and equipment selections to ensure energy and water efficiency. This strategy enabled The Benjamin to bring the entire hotel, from its plumbing and electrical infrastructure to its operational philosophies, up to stringent ECOTEL® standards. The environmental mission began in its philosophy and extends to the practical, with programs that involve not only the staff, but the guests as well.

Manhattan East Suite Hotels, New York's largest all-suite hotel group, opened The Benjamin in April 1999 as its first four-star Executive Suite Hotel. Located at 125 East 50th Street, on the corner of Lexington Avenue, The Benjamin offers an intimate, boutique-style setting in one of the hottest locations in the city. Manhattan East has expanded the property, site of the former Hotel Beverly, from 188 rooms to 209 rooms, including 97 one-bedroom suites and a deluxe two-bedroom suite. A complete $30 million renovation included the installation of a first-class telecommunications and technology system and restoration of details that highlight the original design of its famed architect, Emery Roth. From one 130-suite hotel, family-owned Manhattan East Suite Hotels has grown to 10 properties with more than 2,100 units and over 1,000 employees. While representing a new concept for Manhattan East, The Benjamin reflects the company's tradition of offering a unique value in the New York market, combined with consistent and genuine personal service.
