ECOLODGE SHIMANTO
ECO
PROGRAM DETAILS
Once
fully operational, the ECOLODGE SHIMANTO will have one of the most
unique environmental initiatives of any hotel on the planet. The hotel
has been designed and built with sustainability as the main theme of the
project. Below is a list of just a few of the items that make up the
resort’s environmental program:
- A menu of locally harvested foods is available
to guests, including eels, river shrimps, crabs, and even special
grasses which live in the adjacent river.
- Because of its remote location, stargazing is a
popular activity among guests. PES International, the design team
responsible for the project used a special lighting system to
eliminate any light pollution from grounds lighting.
- The hotel was developed by Japan Rail Company,
thus has incorporated elements of the rail industry into the design as
part of the creative recycling and reuses effort. Barrels used
decades ago as rail-shipping crates are used to catch rainwater in
strategic spots, and old rail-ties are used as paving throughout most
of the resort.
- Hard surfaced areas are paved with a porous
surface to allow rainwater to seep into the ground as it should.
